Earthquake Info to Keep you Safe

As the news is reporting the earthquake on the west coast of the United States I can't help but think of those of you in that area.

Being a native California I have lived through many earthquakes.  It is a bit different here in Calfiornia because most of building are built to survive earthquakes with little damage.  But having said that there are a few tips that I want to pass on.

Running out of the building you are in is not neccesarily the best thing.  During and immediately after an earthquak many people are injuried by glass and other materials falling from the building they are trying to exit.

The best place to be during an earthquake is under a strong table or counter.  Be as far away from window as you can.  An interior doorway is another more stable place to take shelter during a quake.

As soon as the quake is over exit the building or house and get everyone together.  If your home is damaged you will want to turn off your gas and water at the main shut off to prevent fire or water damage.

I hope these tips help to you feel more safe.

  2. Good reminder for me. When we lived in California we were always rocking and rolling and really didn't give it much thought because you are so right, our homes were built to easily withstand minor quakes. Great advice!

Not sure how I would handle one of those here. Tornado no big deal, but earthquake.... that one might shake me up a bit! lol

  5. Earthquakes are a very frightening issue for anyone that lives in Calfornia. Unlike other natural disasters there is no way to know that one is coming and so as you stress here, it is good to always be prepared!

    Thanks for the tips.

  6. The worst part of the shaking usually lasts only 10-30 seconds but can seem like much longer. Many earthquake injuries and fatalities occur from trying to escape the danger running, rather than by covering up and waiting it out.
