Earthquake Info to Keep you Safe

As the news is reporting the earthquake on the west coast of the United States I can't help but think of those of you in that area.

Being a native California I have lived through many earthquakes.  It is a bit different here in Calfiornia because most of building are built to survive earthquakes with little damage.  But having said that there are a few tips that I want to pass on.

Running out of the building you are in is not neccesarily the best thing.  During and immediately after an earthquak many people are injuried by glass and other materials falling from the building they are trying to exit.

The best place to be during an earthquake is under a strong table or counter.  Be as far away from window as you can.  An interior doorway is another more stable place to take shelter during a quake.

As soon as the quake is over exit the building or house and get everyone together.  If your home is damaged you will want to turn off your gas and water at the main shut off to prevent fire or water damage.

I hope these tips help to you feel more safe.

Vintage Dilemma, HELP!

While we were recently recently rearranging half of our house I finally found a place for my recently acquired vintage suit cases.

I was thrilled to finally have a place to display them. I had been using them for storage in my project room but I love them here in the office.

I have been collecting them since October of last year and I still haven’t taken the price tags from Goodwill. I picked up each of them for under $11.

When I realized that my hubby had slipped our paper shredder behind the cases I had a light bulb moment. I could fasten the cases together and cut a hole in each one so that I could slip the paper shredder inside. All I would have to do is open the lid of the top case to access the shredder.

This is what it would look like. What a great idea! I hate that paper shredder, it is so ugly. But should I really cut holes in them, what if the size of paper shredders changes or they fall out of use. Well I would still have an fabulous one of a kind end table with the added bonus of the storage. I was ready to start sawing.

That is when I was visited by “crafter’s remorse”. You know what I am talking about, the sudden feeling that you should not alter anything old, sentamental, real wood or vintage.  Mine went something like this: "If I cut holes in them, they could never been used as luggage again. But the likelihood of my using these cases to carry my pj’s and swim suits to a holiday in Italy is slim to none.  Should I damage these vintage cases or leave them pristine?

So what am I to do? I need your help. Please leave me a comment giving me your opinion.

1)Do I cut into these suitcases to make them into a vintage cozy for our shredder?

or

2) Should they stay in their original form hoping for a vacation every once in a while?

Let me know what you think and thanks for reading,

The Goings On at the Dog House

misc2 032
The last 10 days have been really busy.  Good busy, but busy all the same.   We started out with a few days at the coast with some good friends.

Upon returning home we did some touch up to the baseboards in the dining room.  I didn’t do a great job at taping off the baseboard and the paint bled on to the new floors.  Dental tools to the rescue. They worked wonderfully.

Next we rearranged half the house.  The living room that had become my project room became my son’s room.  The living room furniture was moved to the office.  My son’s room became my craft room.  The office and the living room/son’s room are all organized.

The same can not be said about my son’s former room.  Since we were expecting weekend visitors everything left over got shoved into what will be my project room.  So my first project will be organizing the room.

Since I woke up at 5 am on Saturday I had plenty of time to line the back of the china hutch with my painted wallpaper.  I even had time to start arranging a few items on the shelves.  There is still more work to do here.

All of this was followed by the arrival of my in-laws and my daughter and her dog.  We enjoyed the family time but boy was I tired.

And because all of that was not enough, Zoey managed to hurt her knee.  The vet said the best thing for her along with the anti-inflammatories was two days of rest.  Thank goodness!  As long as I sit, Zoey sits which means I finally got some rest.
Coming up here at Three Dogs At Home,  more details on some of these projects, the half bath progress,  and some new second hand treasures.  See you soon.
