Gates to the Past

Yesterday my husband and I went for a walk in one of the older neighborhood here in Bakersfield.  I am going to guess that the homes were built between the 1920’s to 1940’s.

As we walked and snapped pictures I noticed that all of these homes had beautiful and unique gates.
I am crazy about this first gate.  After all what’s not to love about a wrought iron arch with a lights all surrounded by a white picket fence.  We stood out in front of the house admiring for so long that the owner came out to see what we were looking.  She was happy to hear that I thought her home was beautifully done.

I have a thing for arched doors and I guess that love extends to arched gates because I flipped for the this one with the spindles.

Many of these houses in this old neighborhood had a gate on both sides of the yard.   The gates of this home had different looks and of course two more arches, these above the gate.

And while the gates might match the arch over this one is covered with Morning Glory vine.  Too bad it was not morning because it was coved in closed blooms just waiting to open tomorrow morning.   Don’t you just love the diamond pattern cut into this gate.

While this next gate has no arch it does have lots of charm.

I am not sure anyone could fit through this narrow little gate but it made the final cut because, you guessed it, it has an arch.   The house was probably built in the 30’s and the wrought iron was fabulous.

Out of all the gates we saw this afternoon my first love is still my true love, as far as gates go.

So which gate did you fall for?

Thanks for reading,

  1. Traci,

I've loved Garden Gates all my life. When I was a kid, the neighbor lady had a beautiful garden and a wonderful, old wooden arched gate led into it. She had all old-fashioned flowers.

I love either the first gate (the one you're partial to) and the second gate (wooden one).

    Have a great week!

  4. Spindles. Definitely. Don't you just love older neighborhoods that aren't filled with McMansions? So much lovely character.

  5. I found you via Pinterest! Love your gate post and I think you have helped me decide on what look I want for my gate. My son built me an arbor several years ago and my hubby gave me an IOU for a gate last year. I knew I wanted spindles but wasn't sure just how to make it look- then I found the one on your blog! Thanks so much!

Enjoyed reading your profile. I too have fibro so can so empathize with the lack of energy for all the projects!
